July 12th, 2016 brings us 44-days away from the National Park Service Centennial. In this edition of the #CentennialCountdown we go back 44-years to 1972 and what was an incredibly busy year for the National Park Service. The following units of the park service were established.. Guadalupe Mountains National Park, Buffalo National River, Carl Sandburg Home, Cumberland Island National Seashore, Bowie National Historic Site, Fossil Butte National Monument, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Grant Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site, Hohokam Pima National Monument, John Rockefeller Memorial Parkway, JFK Center for Performing Arts, Lower Saint Croix National Scenic River, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Point Reyes National Seashore, and Thaddeus Kosciuszko National Memorial.
In addition to the creation of all the park sites the National Park Service Director George B. Hartzog, Jr. ended a nearly 9-year stint as director and Yellowstone National Park celebrated its 100th year!
