May 19th is 98-days away from the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service on August, 25th, 2016. We are going to try and give you a little bit of history of the National Park Service from 98-years ago in 1918.
If you haven't heard of Katmai National Park then you have certainly seen pictures...
Katmai was established in 1918 as a National Monument, it was not selected for preservation because of the bear and salmon. Rather, it was created a National Monument. The largest volcanic eruption of the 20th century happened there in 1912 and they set aside the land, to protect those areas. It remains an active volcanic landscape, but it also protects 9,000 years of human history as well as important habitat for salmon and brown bears.
