August 6th, 2016 brings us 19 days away from the National Park Service Centennial. In this edition of the #CentennialCountdown we go back 19 years to 1997 when Robert Stanton was appointed as the first African-American Director of the National Park Service.
One of the taboo subjects in the National Park Service is the lack of diversity, both in the staff and in the people that are visiting the parks. It's one of those things that is just quietly not mentioned. As an American this makes me sad. The parks are for the people and EVERY person in our country should have the opportunity to visit them. I don't know how to increase the diversity of the staff, or visitors but it is something that I think is important. The peace and comfort that that parks brings should be something that all people of our country experience.
