Halcomb Trip

SUGGESTIONS:

GRAND TETON NATIONAL PARK:

  • Schwabacher’s Landing - This spot can be packed, but it is the location you are most likely to see a moose crossing the river in front of the Teton’s. Come at sunrise or sunset.

  • Hikes

    • Paintbrush Canyon - Lake Solitude - Cascade Canyon: This is an awesome loop that you could do by spending a night near Lake Solitude. I would recommend going up Paintbrush Canyon and coming down Cascade Canyon. You would need a backcountry permit to do the overnight.

    • Death Canyon to Patrol Cabin - 8 miles round trip with 2,000 feet of elevation gain

    • Lupine Meadows Trailhead - From here you can do Amphitheater Lake (10 miles round trip with 3,000 feet of gain), or Garnet Canyon (8.4 miles round trip with 2,200 feet of gain). There is also a side hike to Delta Lake which is beautiful and is a little side hike off of the main trail.

  • Shadow Mountain - This is a great camping spot that is not in the National Park but gives you a good view of the Tetons

  • Restaurants:

    • Million Dollar Cowboy Bar - Super touristy, but a pretty cool bar. I have not had their food, but I’m guessing it is burgers and fries.

    • Snake River Brewing - Good beer, simple food

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK

  • Hikes:

    • Lone Star Geyser - 5.3 miles out and back, but takes you to a cool geyser that erupts every 3-hours, make sure to check the timing of eruptions before you go

    • Mount Washburn - 6.5 mile out and back, takes you to a viewpoint over the area. It could be busy with people.

  • Viewpoints:

    • Grand Prismatic Spring Overlook - Park at Fairy Falls Trail Parking Lot and take the short hike to overlook Grand Prismatic. There will be tons of people

    • Morning Glory Pool - make sure to stop at Old Faithful, and take the walk out to Morning Glory. This area of Yellowstone is busy, but worth the crowds.

    • Steamboat Geyser - One of the tallest geysers in the world it has been erupting every several days this year. Check the timing to see if it should be going off while you are there.

    • Artist Point - This is the viewpoint over the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, it will be packed with people

    • Lamar Valley - This is your wildlife viewing spot, elk, bison, pronghorn and wolves all congregate out here

  • Restaurants:

    • Old Faithful Inn - Take your mail to the second floor where you can watch Yellowstone erupt while enjoying lunch.

GREAT BASIN NATIONAL PARK

  • Hikes:

    • Wheeler Peak - 8 mile round trip with 3,000 feet of gain, this is THE hike to do in Great Basin.

    • Lexington Arch - A dirt road takes you to the trailhead, and depending on road conditions and your car you might have to get out and hike. Check with the visitors center for conditions

    • Bristlecone Pine Forest - 4.5 miles with 1,000 feet of gain, this takes you to a grove of the oldest trees on Earth!

  • Lehman Caves - If you like caves, there is a good tour at Lehman Caves at one of the park visitors centers

  • Restaurants:

    • Kerouac’s - New place that has only been open a couple of years and it is awesome! They only do breakfast and dinner, but you should stop by for both.

BRYCE CANYON NATIONAL PARK

  • Hikes:

    • Peek-A-Boo Trailhead - 5.1 mile loop that takes you down into the hoodoos, I prefer doing it at sunrise. Watch sunrise at Bryce Point, and then head down the trail

    • Fairyland Loop Trail -7.4 mile loop that is not super popular, but very beautiful

    • Queens Garden Trail - 2.6 mile loop that is super popular. Avoid if you don’t like crowds.

    • Rainbow Point - Drive the park road out to the end at Rainbow Point, there are tons of stops along the way.

    • Bryce Point - Great sunrise spot, also good to hike Bryce Point on the Rim Trail to Sunset Point

    • Sunset or Sunrise Point - These are great viewing spots for sunrise and sunset (unsurprising) also good for stargazing.
